Meet the Staff! Larry Patton

Meet Larry Patton, the St. Matthew Pastor of Congregational Care. Larry and his wife of 56 years, Diane, have been members of St. Matthew for 34 years.
Larry’s first calling in life was to education and sports. He graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a Master’s in math education and a minor in guidance and went to work for the Belleville Township High School teaching math. When Belleville Township High School East (as it was known then) opened its doors in 1966 it was Larry who got the call to be the school’s first Baseball Coach. Then, in the late 60’s, Larry got involved with an organization called Fellowship of Christian Athletes and his life was forever changed.
In 1993 he became a lay-counselor at St. Matthew and after 30 years of shaping young mathletes and athletes, Larry got another call. This time it was to coach for God’s team. He completed the United Methodist Seminary Course of Study and was ordained as a deacon in June of 1999. Paring his background as an educator of minds and a strengthener of bodies with his new calling and passion for growing the Spirit, Pastor Larry’s first order of business was to teach a “Spiritual Boot Camp” mixing sport and Spirit like only he can do. The rest, as they say, is history.
Now that he is “retired” Pastor Larry works part time, but with a full time love for the Lord. He preaches on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 in the Prayer, Praise & Preaching service in the Chapel. He also makes hospital, nursing home, assisted living, and home bound visits on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In addition, he teaches the Christian Rockers Sunday School class.
When Pastor Patton isn’t at St. Matthew he is usually on the road. From Montana to Georgia, Larry and Diane have 4 children and 12 grandchildren (one in Heaven) they visit often. If it’s not a trip to see family, it’s a trip with their St. Matthew family on the big red bus. These active travelers never miss a Spring Training or a trip to another stadium to watch our Cardinals win.
St. Matthew has been blessed to have Larry share his Ministry with us. His passion for his family, both earthly and divine, are an inspiration to all who know him. Finally, in case you weren’t aware, pitchers and catchers are reporting in just a few days! Go Cardinals!
