Saint Matthew United Methodist Church New Visitor ?      Give Online

A Note from Pastor Jon Carrell

In recent weeks, there has been much speculation about our future. At this time, I do want to confirm that we will be moving this summer at my request. Bishop Frank Beard has appointed me to serve as pastor of Sherman United Methodist Church in Sherman, Illinois effective July 1, 2018. I want to take a moment to answer the question, “Why have I requested to move?” Really, there are two reasons. First, and foremost, Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 9:16, “Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!” I know that this is my primary calling and passion. It was before I came to St. Matthew, and it is still true now. For the good of the ministry of St. Matthew, I have focused primarily on strengthening the finance, administration, and staff of the church during this season of my ministry. I am very glad to have had the opportunity to do these things, and I feel like we have grown in these areas, for which I am encouraged. Having said that, I feel that now is the time to return to my first love and calling of preaching, teaching, and pastoral care.
The other secondary reason that we are making this move is due to my mother’s health. My parents live in Springfield, Illinois, and my mother has had Alzheimer’s Disease the past six years. It has become an increasingly greater burden on my heart that if the Lord offered me the opportunity to live closer to my parents that I needed to be there to assist my father, brother, and sister in caring for my mother. Just as Jesus made sure to look after his mother even while on the cross, I feel that during this next chapter of my ministry, part of my ministry will be ministering to my parents.
Please know how much we love St. Matthew and how blessed we feel to have been a part of this church! We will always cherish this church and take with us fond memories of our time here.  Specifically, St. Matthew will always have a special place in our hearts as the church where Trisha became part our lives, and words cannot express how grateful we are to this church in helping that to be possible.
Thank for you for your love and support, and please know that we love you and are going to miss you!
Love in Christ,
Pastor Jon, Stephanie, Trisha, and Marissa
