James Slone’s 2017 Recommended Reading

God on Mute by Pete Craig, the cofounder of 24-7 Prayer movement, wrestles with the issues of unanswered prayers, sharing insights through biblical and personal experiences of those times when God seems silent, even when we pray most earnestly.

Martin Luther by Eric Metaxas provides an excellent and timely biography of the leader of the Reformation. Metaxas’ informative and fast pace style of writing, including solid research, wit, and fascinating anecdotes, makes it an enjoyable story of “the man who rediscovered God and changed the world.”

Why the Reformation Still Matters by Michael Reeves and Tim Chester in a very readable and relatively short book offers biblical and historical understanding of the major issues of the Reformation and their continued importance in the 21st Century.

The Bad Habits of Jesus by Leonard Sweet, another of my favorite writers, talks about Jesus’ conflict with the culture and traditions the 1st Century Jewish and Roman world. Sweet, as always, writes with wit and solid and fresh biblical insights.

By Signs and Wonders by Stephen Elliott, a new author to me, pleads for evangelism and revival that depends upon the power and work of the Holy Spirit rather than the conventional and popular church growth methods that are prevalent in North American churches. This book speaks to what I consider the greatest issue in the church today.
