Will It Grow?

Somewhere near the 2nd or 3rd grade, I remember an experiment in which all of us students received a sunflower seed and a small container of soil. Our task was to bury the seed in the soil, take it home, water it and watch to see if anything would happen. Did it grow? Sure enough, within several days, there was a little green shoot that came up from the soil. In that one experiment, we learned a special characteristic about all living things. They grow.

It’s not only true of living organisms, it’s also true of our spiritual lives and the Church in which we live. When you look at the book of Acts, it’s revealing to me when we read, “And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:47) Or in another, “Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about 3000 were added to their numbers that day.” (Acts 2:41) The Lord was growing his Church. And I believe the Lord is still growing His Church.

This October, Andy and I will be launching a new series called GROW. Over the four weeks, we’ll be looking at how and where we grow and why this is so critical for us as we seek to live into our calling as a church. What will we explore?

Week 1: Growing Out
Week 2: Growing Up
Week 3: Growing Deeper
Week 4: Growing Together

When you look at your spiritual life, how would you say it has grown over the last 5 years? The last 2 years? The last week? While there may always be ebb and flow to our personal growth patterns, we can always pray and work for growth in the Church. I hope you will join us for the month of October as we look at how God invites us to GROW.
