 Passage: Matthew 4:17
The first thesis in Luther's 95 Theses cites the subject of Jesus' first sermon-repentance (Matthew 4:17). In fact, the first four theses are about the nature of true repentance. A return to real repentance was not only essential for the Reformation, but it is essential for our salvation and holy living today.

 Passage: Romans 1:17
Martin Luther considered Justification by Faith to be "the summary of all Christian doctrine" and "the article by which the church stands or falls." We live in dangerous days. We may not need another full-blown reformation, but we certainly need to remember and reemphasize the great Scriptural truths that revived the Church in those days 500 years ago. Let's look at some essential biblical teachings that Luther and others of the Reformation period experienced and proclaimed, truths we still must hold on to today.

Martin Luther did not set out to start a rebellion. He was not a fire-breathing, fed-up radical hammering his 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church, the event commonly associated with the Reformation. His hammer was the Word of God (Jeremiah 23:29).

 Passage: Titus 2:13
Paul not only ways that we have hope, he says we have blessed hope, a future full of blessings, and future that itself is blessed. All that says that the future expectations of those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ is better than good.

 Passage: 1 Peter 1:3
Peter wrote a letter of hope, sure hope, hope for the future anchored in an event that happened in the past. By the third verse of his letter, Peter breaks into a doxology, a praise to God, in which he defines the nature and basis of that hope.

 Passage: Romans 5:5
Hope is not listed as a fruit of the Spirit, but there are plenty of Scriptures, including Romans 5:5, which tell us that it is through the ministry of the Holy Spirit that God empowers us to hope.

 Passage: Hebrews 6:19
I need images, or metaphors, to begin to understand most biblical concepts. And, I especially need images to grasp the idea of hope.

 Passage: Ephesians 4:4
Hope is one of the predominate themes in Scripture, especialy in the New Testament epistles, and a basic virtue of Christian teaching and living. In the next few weeks, we will take a look at what Scripture says about hope. Today, we will see what Paul says about it in the Epistle of Ephesians. Let's start with Ephesians 4:4 and work backwards to chapter 1, verse 12.

 Passage: John 2:1-11
The Gospels record at least 35 miracles of Jesus. He raises the dead, heals the sick, feeds 5,000, walks on water, stills storms, and more; all impressive and compassionate revelations of divine power. But, one of his miracles, the very first one, has given me problems.
